Faculty at Lone Star College–CyFair have been partnering with faculty at Cy-Fair ISD in an effort to get students ready for college. The program—College Awareness Readiness Education, or CARE—seeks to align curriculum and counseling between high schools and colleges to reduce remediation rates.
Partnerships have been forged with Cy-Fair, Spring and Aldine ISDs, LSC–CyFair President Audre Levy said. Levy gave a presentation on the program to the LSCS board at a Nov. 6 meeting.
"It's meant to create a smooth transition between the high school and college levels," Levy said. "A student really is taking an Algebra class in high school now, whereas in the past that class might have not been hitting all the marks as it does at the college level."
CARE targets students in math, English, social studies and the sciences. Through the first few years, the results have been encouraging. High school students enrolled in the program showed an 8 percent increase in success in math courses at LSC and a 5 percent increase in success in English courses, Levy said.
