With entertainment in the modern age centering more and more around computer screens, an old-school community gathering place continues to thrive with leagues, tournaments and open bowling. Founded by Cypress residents and hall-of-fame bowlers Pete Trebig and Bill Lillard, Copperfield Bowl celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2013.

"The sport of bowling is interactive, and there are no age or gender barriers, so you can play with anyone and it will still be fun," said Mike Nelson, manager of the center for 18 years. "You don't bowl for just the sport. The relationships are a central part of why people come."

Copperfield Bowl has always been league driven, Nelson said. The majority of league players have been with the business for years. What keeps bowlers coming back is the consistency and reliability, he said.

"We have a lot of people drive across town to bowl here," Nelson said. "They know the lanes will be in good condition, the bathrooms will be clean and that everything will roll along in order."

In addition to 44 regulation-sized lanes, the center also offers a game room and pro shop with bowling supplies. A snack bar serves up standard bowling alley fare, but certified chef Debbie Beck can also whip up lasagna, meatloaf and other specialty dishes.

The center is well lit, and the atmosphere has been designed to convey a familial feeling, emphasizing its role as a community gathering place where everyone is welcome. Starting in September 2014, Copperfield Bowl will also be a smoke-free facility, Nelson said.

In December, the center hosted the Southeast Regional Special Olympics tournament with 600 competitors.

"It's one of our favorite events of the year," Nelson said. "The kids have so much fun and, by the end of it, they never want to leave."
