Agency hosts flu vaccination event for Harris County seniors

The Harris County Area Agency on Aging will host a free flu vaccination event for seniors from 9–11:30 a.m. Sept. 23 at the West Gray Metropolitan Multiservice Center.

"Throughout the season we do a variety of activities to encourage seniors to get out and get the vaccine," said Dr. Faith Foreman, assistant director for the Houston Department of Health and Human Services. "This is our jump-start to get the word out early."

Seniors age 60 and older are encouraged to come out for the free clinic, as they are one of the vulnerable populations more susceptible to catching the flu, Foreman said.

"As we age, our immune system weakens and makes us more vulnerable," she said. "For someone over age 65, getting the flu vaccine can help improve the production of the antibody that fights the flu."

The event will also provide guests with information on how to stay well during flu season, Foreman said.

"Getting the vaccine early is one way [to stay well], particularly if you're a senior," she said. "Because there are different types of vaccines, we want to encourage folks to attend our event and speak with their doctor to find out what type of vaccine is best for them."

Flu season is expected to begin in the next few weeks and last through the early part of 2015.
