There are a number of ways to volunteer across the Cy-Fair area this holiday season and all year-round. Opportunities range from helping families in need to cleaning up local parks.


Give back to the youth
Cy-Fair ISD
The school district is in need of volunteers for its Volunteers in Public Schools program. Individuals can volunteer in science labs and cultural arts programs, read to students, perform clerical work, deliver materials from the Charlotte Davis Burns Science Resource Center to schools, work in school libraries, serve as mentors or participate in the annual Bus Buddies program.

Cy-Fair Sports Association
The association hosts baseball, basketball, cheerleading, football, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball and wrestling events for young athletes in Cy-Fair. Volunteers are needed for coaching, committees for individual sports, leadership committees, field maintenance, crowd control and registration assistance.

Cy-Hope
The nonprofit needs volunteers at Hope Centers to assist with teaching English as a Second Language classes, helping students with homework or volunteering during family nights. Volunteers are also needed for special events and to help with Cy-Hope’s backpack and school adoption programs. Local businesses, churches or schools can also become Cy-Hope partners. Cy-Hope’s resale shop, Hope Chest, is seeking volunteers to accept donations on Wednesdays and Saturdays and with help sorting and organizing donations. The center is accepting donations to help restore inventory after sustaining damage during Hurricane Harvey.

Family to Family Network
The nonprofit is dedicated to assisting the families of children with disabilities. Volunteers can help by giving donations, helping with events and working at the office. Volunteers who help with events—including the annual conference and resource fair in January—help with setup, cleanup, signing in guests and serving as room monitors. Around the office, volunteers can help with database input and grant writing, among other tasks.

Langham Creek Family YMCA
Volunteers are needed to assist with coaching youth sports teams, assisting with community events, such as Operation Backpack and the Fall Festival, and serving on the board of advisors. Volunteers can also serve as “buddies” with the YMCA’s Miracle League, where they can help athletes with special needs.

Help those with special needs
Bethesda Lutheran Communities
The organization provides home care, day programs, employment and educational support for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. BLC seeks volunteers to conduct Bible classes, provide transportation, perform home visits to provide fellowship and devotions, and clean houses. The group is also looking for volunteers to spend time with individuals in their group homes, serve and assist in group homes, and help landscape and decorate for Christmas.

Reach Unlimited
The nonprofit provides support services for people with learning or developmental disabilities. Reach offers flexible volunteer opportunities, including assisting in classrooms at the Learning Activity Center, assisting with clerical duties at the business office and assisting with special events. Help the sick
Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital
The hospital is looking for enthusiastic junior and adult volunteers to help out with several tasks in various departments throughout the hospital in both clinical and nonclinical areas, including the physical therapy and emergency room departments, information desk and gift shop. Morning and afternoon shifts are available, and volunteers are asked to serve a minimum of four consecutive hours each week. Interested individuals can stop by the gift shop to fill out an application or sign up online. The Junior Volunteer Program takes place over the summer and is open to a limited number of students ages 14-24.

Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital
The hospital has an active volunteer program for adults that can include interacting with patients, assisting staff and providing administrative support. A junior volunteer program for high school students ages 16-18 runs each year from June through August.

Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital
Volunteers are needed to help at the hospital’s

North Cypress Medical Center
Volunteers provide a variety of services ranging from patient and physician assistance to clerical support. Current opportunities include helping with the book cart, assisting at the Breast Center, helping at the cardiac lab, assisting with lab registration, helping with food and nutrition services, and helping in the surgery waiting area. Volunteers must be age 18 or older.

Give back to the community
Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department
The department is actively seeking volunteers. Before volunteers can join, they must attend at least two Thursday night meetings, which begin at 7 p.m., at the appropriate station to learn about volunteer
responsibilities. The captain will then assist volunteers in completing a cadet training program. Individuals can stop by one of the 12 fire stations to get more information. Uniform and firefighting clothing are provided to new members.

Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County
Volunteers can help with administrative duties and work at Restore, an outlet store for building materials. The nonprofit organization is always accepting volunteers for its construction projects. It also needs volunteers for its Harvey Home Repair initiative, which launches in January. Volunteers for this project must be 18 years or older. Volunteers for other projects must be at least 16 years old, and those younger than 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Give back to those in crisis
Cy-Fair Helping Hands 
The nonprofit serves homeless and hungry individuals and families throughout the region. Volunteers participate on the homeless outreach team, deliver care packages to men and women living on the streets, work in the food pantry and the soon-to-be started community garden, or serve as mentors to homeless high school students in Cy-Fair ISD. During the holidays, volunteers provide meals to the community.

Shield Bearer
The nonprofit offers professional counseling and prevention services. Shield Bearer helps human trafficking survivors; victims of crime and abuse; veterans and their families; struggling married couples; and individuals battling addiction, loss, depression and self-injury. Volunteers are needed to help transfer donation items and supplies between offices as well as coordinate events and help in the offices with mailouts, data entry and data organization, among other tasks.
