Lone Star College swears in new board members

The Lone Star College System welcomed three new board members to its board of trustees at a Dec. 4 meeting.

Alton Smith, Art Murillo and Ken Lloyd were sworn in to represent districts 3, 4 and 9 respectively. The new trustees were officially elected Nov. 6, and were confirmed after a canvassing of the votes Nov. 14.

Murillo and Smith ran unopposed to replace Stephanie Marquard and Robert Adam, who were not able to run because of new rules stating a trustee must live within the district they represent. Murillo and Smith both have trustee experience having previously served on the Aldine ISD board of trustees.

Lloyd beat out two opponents—Lamar Casparis and Dom Bongiorni—with 71 percent of the vote to replace Priscilla Kelly, who decided not to run for reelection. He said he was inspired to run with hopes of being able to provide support for workforce training programs at the college.

Trustees serve six-year terms, and are volunteers who serve without pay.

The board also voted in a new chair, vice chair, secretary and assistant secretary to two-year terms. Trustee Linda Good was selected as chair, with Kyle Scott, Ron Trowbridge and Smith filling in the rest of the offices.

A nominating committee composed of trustees Bob Wolfe, Kelly, Marquard and Adam nominated David Holsey to be chair for the second term, along with David Vogt, Good and Scott filling in the other officers. However, Trowbridge made a separate motion for Good to be the new chair, which ended up garnering more board support.

"I believe the board chairman should be changed every two years with the general election," he said. "Trustee Good has proven that she knows the procedures and is familiar with the needs of system."
