New confirmed COVID-19 cases in Harris County and the city of Houston jumped by more than 2,000 over the June 19-21 weekend, an increase that city officials attributed to the prolonged processing of cases by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
A total of 1,187 new cases were confirmed June 19, and 1,135 were confirmed June 20. The city of Houston no longer updates case counts on Sundays, but 179 new cases were confirmed in Harris County outside of the city of Houston on June 21.
The Houston Health Department, which confirmed 844 cases June 20, said 93.5% of those tests were conducted between June 8-12 with result dates between June 10-15.

The number of deaths in Harris County attributed to COVID-19 increased by 20 between June 19-21, according to data from city and county public health officials. The total case count now stands at 21,053, with 12,580 cases considered active and 8,148 confirmed to have recovered. A total of 325 deaths have been confirmed.
