Officials with the Harris County Public Health Department and Houston Health Department confirmed 469 new cases of COVID-19 over the Memorial Day weekend, bringing the county's case total to 10,995.
Officials confirmed 244 cases May 23, 151 cases May 24 and 74 cases May 25. The total confirmed recoveries in the county increased by 214 over the three-day weekend, bringing the total to 4,395. Another four coronavirus-related deaths were confirmed, bringing the total to 221.
Under guidelines from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, day care centers, bars and entertainment venues—including bowling alleys and bingo parlors—were allowed to reopen at a limited occupancy May 22. Moving forward, health officials in Harris County said social distancing, hand washing and wearing face coverings will be more important than even in preventing the spread of the virus.
