New Tech High at Coppell to add mobile app development course in 2020-21 school year

Some Coppell ISD students will be able to learn how to develop mobile applications beginning in the 2020-21 academic year.

CISD trustees approved Dec. 16 the addition of a mobile app development course to New Tech High at Coppell's 2020-21 course list.

The update provides one of the first STEM—science, technology, engineering and mathematics—programs of study located within the high school, said Ron-Marie Johnson, the district’s director of career and technical education and fine arts.

"We were able to ... add a course that we think students are going to be interested in taking and give the opportunity to actually develop some apps as one of their final projects,” Johnson said at the Dec. 16 meeting.

The course will give students the chance to collaborate on the development of a mobile applications to solve problems presented throughout the year, according to a district-prepared summary of the new course.

The CISD board of trustees also approved the addition of a retail management course credit at New Tech High at Coppell through its partnership with North Lake College.

That update aligns the district with current state-approved career and technical education programs, according to the district.
