Suit Up Ministries, a nonprofit organization serving Montgomery County and the Greater Houston area, is gearing up to deliver a new network to support fathers of all backgrounds.
The organization provides men with resources and tools to become better fathers, meaning they are active and involved in their children’s lives, said founder Jeff Springer, who lives in the Montgomery area. The support groups, known as “huddles,” are a new initiative this year that will be led by qualified men who are called “champions.”
“We don’t tell them how often to meet, where to meet ... [or who to invite],” Springer said, adding that groups should strive to meet at least once a month. “We will help with social media, communication, curriculum and resources.”
Springer said research suggests that children who grow up without a father are more likely to fall into poverty, get into disciplinary behavior and even land in jail. Fatherlessness is also often a cycle, and Springer said he hopes to transform Montgomery County by rebuilding families.
