Lone Star College-Montgomery students invited to perform play at national festival

The Lone Star College-Montgomery's Department of Theatre will perform its production of "Student Body" at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival on Feb. 25, according to a press release. The students will compete against colleges from Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana and Arkansas for awards and cash prizes. This is the first time LSC-Montgomery has performed at the festival.

“The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival is a national theater program involving 18,000 students from colleges and universities nationwide and has grown into a network of more than 600 academic institutions throughout the country,” said Terry Peterman, dean of the LSC-Montgomery Department of Theatre, Education, Arts and Music.

"Student Body," written by Frank Winters, examines campus sexual assault; its protagonists discover a video at a party of a sex act that "may or may not be considered consensual."

Student actor Matthew Young said the story of sexual assault struck a chord with him.

“Sexual assault is still a problem on college campuses across the country," Young said. "Now that this show will be premiering at a festival, a handful of schools will be put in the same room and hopefully continue the conversation. This puts 'Student Body' in the position to be a powerful educational tool.”

The production was originally performed in fall 2019. An encore performance of "Student Body" will be held Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at LSC-Montgomery's main-stage theater at 3200 College Park Drive, Conroe.
