After months of research and feedback, the Montgomery ISD Board of Trustees voted to put its proposed virtual learning program on hold at the Nov. 2 special meeting.
Why now
As previously reported, since Oct. 6 Montgomery ISD officials have been reviewing a pilot plan to run a virtual learning program for the upcoming spring 2027 semester.
The purpose of the pilot program was not only to test the virtual program's capabilities, but also to bring back students who recently left the district and went virtual. If the pilot was successful, MISD would then discuss plans for expansion of the program in the following semester.
MISD Superintendent Mark Ruffin said that the district also sent out a survey to 1,049 recipients and received 797 completed responses. Of those responses, 45% were interested in a hybrid virtual model and 78 families confirmed interest in full-time, at-home learning.
A follow-up survey was sent to approximately 100 families who left the district for homeschooling or virtual programs this past year. Of the 100 families, 6 respondents said they had interest in the program for spring 2027 and 5 indicated interest in fall 2027.
After the initial discussion, MISD board members expressed some concerns about the pilot program’s spring 2027 launch date and whether the surveys represented the desires of the Montgomery community.
Quote of note
MISD Chief of Staff Justin Marino released an official statement from MISD and Superintendent Ruffin on the decision to hold off on the program. Ruffin said that the goal of MISD is to ensure every educational program meets the needs of its students and the academic expectations of the community.
“While a virtual learning option may provide meaningful opportunities for some students, we want to ensure we have thoughtfully evaluated the challenges and are prepared to deliver a program that supports strong student outcomes before moving forward,” Ruffin said.
So for now, MISD will be taking a step back to review the program and ensure the district's quality standards are met. As of press time, there is no timeline for when the item may be brought back to board members.
