Lone Star College System withdraws court proceedings related to Nov. 5 ballot error

On Feb. 6, Lone Star College System’s board of trustees voted to withdraw federal court proceedings concerning the Nov. 5 election results for the District 2 trustee position.

Long story short

Prior to the November election, the LSCS trustee positions for districts 1 and 2 were mistakenly placed on all Harris County ballots within the system’s boundaries after LSCS staff made an error when submitting the ballots, as previously reported by Community Impact. The positions should have been on district-specific ballots.

Trustees voted to seek help from a court of the Southern District of Texas for the District 2 trustee election after 7,489 votes in the election couldn’t be verified, as previously reported by Community Impact. However, on Feb. 6, LSCS trustees unanimously voted—under the consent agenda, which is made up of multiple items voted on in one motion—to withdraw the legal proceedings.

In response to questions from Community Impact about the withdrawn legal proceedings, an LSCS spokesperson said via a Feb. 12 email that the college does not have additional information on the topic, but an update could be provided in the future.

On Nov. 21, the challenger for the District 2 trustee position—Daniel "Danny" Meza—was sworn in. The spot was previously held by Ernestine Pierce, but Meza received 51.04% of votes.

District 2 stretches across north Harris County, covering the communities of Spring, Aldine and Humble, according to the LSCS website.
