Threadgill's World Headquarters, at 301 W. Riverside Drive, Austin, plans to close at the end of March 2018 because of sharply rising rent downtown, according to a company spokesperson. "We are desperately trying to find a way to keep from closing," the spokesperson said in an email. Threadgill's opened its first location in 1933 on North Lamar Boulevard. Janis Joplin performed at the gas station-turned-beer joint. Eddie Wilson took over Threadgill's in the early 1980s and transformed it into a Southern restaurant. In 1996, Threadgill's World Headquarters opened on Riverside.
