President Joe Biden laid out plans to invest $109 billion for two free years of community college for every American student in a speech April 29 to a joint session of Congress.
The American Families Plan, which also includes increased investments in federal Pell grants and free universal preschool, would be funded in part by increasing the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28%, Biden said.
Austin Community College Chancellor Richard Rhodes said Biden’s speech shows that federal leadership “believes in community colleges and the role that we play in revitalizing the economy and getting people back to work.”
“Community colleges are the economic engine for all our communities,” Rhodes said. “And we are the avenue for access to higher education.”
