[gallery ids="315560,315561,315562"] Rave On Vintage co-owner Mike Hooker said growing up, his mother used to tell him he was born in the wrong era. Today, Hooker and his wife, Chelsea Wine, have turned an obsession with the 1950s and 1960s into a business that thrives on midcentury nostalgia. The couple opened Rave On Vintage in 2013. The midcentury modern furniture and home goods shop operates out of a one-story, 1960s-styled home at 1509 W. North Loop Blvd. Hooker and Wine designed the interior just as they would a home, with each piece of furniture and each track from their playlist in perfect harmony with the time period. The intent, Hooker said, is to transport patrons back to the bygone era. “We’re trying to bring you into a new environment that you can’t get at any other shop,” Hooker said. Midcentury modern is a classic furniture style born out of what were considered modern designs in the mid-20th century—the 1950s and 1960s. Hooker said the furniture typically stands on tapered legs and, depending on where it is manufactured, is often built using walnut, teak or rosewood. The pieces in the shop range from loud-colored couches to sleek credenzas and chrome, 1950s atomic-styled kitchen sets. “It’s clean, sleek-looking furniture with a very minimalist design,” Hooker said. Although he has seen many trends throughout the years, Hooker said dining tables have been the most consistently popular item. Recently, the fashion has shifted toward teak, lighter-toned Danish furniture, particularly for vinyl record storage, he said. Hooker and Wine are the shop’s only employees and handpick each item sold in the store. Due to strong local competition, they often travel outside of Austin to collect their inventory. Hooker said pieces have come from all over Texas, but they typically strike gold in states such as Kansas, Missouri, Indiana and Oklahoma. There is no set pickup schedule, but Hooker said pickups occur often as store pieces typically sell within three weeks, some items selling within minutes after they post photos to Instagram. “We travel all over the country. We don’t really shop locally. There is so much competition for the stuff [in Austin] and so many other stores and vendors that we don’t even look [locally],” Hooker said. Rave On Vintage sits between Room Service Vintage on North Loop Boulevard and Uptown Modern on Burnet Road. With Room Service at the less expensive side of the market and Uptown Modern at the high-end, Hooker said Rave On’s target market sits between the two established shops as well. There is a fraternal relationship between the midcentury modern vintage stores in town, Hooker said. “If [their customers] can’t find what they’re looking for, they send them here [and vice versa],” Hooker said. “It’s a really nice community in which everyone helps each other out.” Rave On Vintage 1509 W.
