Now Open
Umarell
Umarell, a new Italian restaurant with New Jersey roots, opened in Hyde Park in February. The casual Italian restaurant serves a variety of pastas, sandwiches, salads and appetizers. Pastas served include the Ricotta Dumplings, Everything Bagel Cavatelli and Ricotta Ravioli.
Barton Springs Nursery Showroom and Design Studio
The studio officially opened in mid-March, offering consultations, design services, installations and a selection of homegoods and furniture. The space has a range of retail offerings, including books, skincare and textiles from Oaxaca, Mexico.
ThoroughFare
CEO Ryan Goebel and co-founder Nick Vukmaravich opened a new market in Mueller offering bakery, café, deli and grocery items all made by the brand. The products are made without seed oil, artificial preservatives, colors or flavors. ThoroughFare held a soft opening at its new spot in Mueller on March 17, according to general manager Arturo Carrasquillo.
Twin Liquors
Twin Liquors opened its new location in late April, according to a news release. The new store offers a range of spirits, including tequila, mezcal and gin. The store also has whiskey and wines. The new store is positioned next to North Lamar’s Central Market.
Only The Wild Ones
The outdoor vinyl and natural wine bar is now spinning tracks and serving drinks at its South Congress spot, said Maria Romero, consulting digital media manager. The menu features wines, cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks. Food options include light bites and shared plates.
Sugarwolf Bakery
Austin’s newest bakery held its grand opening in downtown on May 5, serving coffee, cocktails, pastries and lunch. Sugarwolf sells scratch-made baked goods, made daily. The new restaurant uses organic flour and grass-fed butter, and makes products without seed oils.
Empowered Cafe
The new coffee shop, founded by Nicholas Carllin, employs adults with Down Syndrome to foster independence and an inclusive space for all. The cafe is open daily from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. and will serve espresso drinks, fresh pastries and breakfast tacos from local partners.
Coming Soon
WellSuite
WellSuite will provide on-demand treatment rooms for health and wellness practitioners to see patients. Practitioners and professionals can utilize the treatment rooms with no long term lease commitments and no overhead, CEO Delfin Ward said.
Generator
Husband and wife pair, Delfin Ward and Jessica Tranchina are opening up a sister business to Generator Athlete Lab called Generator. The new location will focus on recovery programs, including cold and hot plunge, a sauna and clinical-based massage therapy.
Bohème
The new lodging space is expected to pay homage to Austin’s soul and heritage, as stated in a news release. With 20 unique rooms, guests will have the opportunity to have an individualized experience combined with the city’s culture and history.
Alteño
Johnny and Kasie Curiel of Fonda Fina Hospitality are slated to partner with 1 Hotel Austin to open a new Mexican restaurant this summer. Menu items at Alteño include Pan De Elote and pollo a las brasas, as well as classic cocktails.
1 Hotel Austin
A new hotel is headed for Red River Street in Austin. The destination will have 252 guest rooms, 60 of them being luxury suites, restaurants, a spa and yoga studio, according to a news release.
Submersive
Bouldin Creek will soon be home to Submersive's flagship location—an "immersive art bathhouse," according to a news release. The wellness concept will combine hydrotherapy with art installations. This will include cold plunges, hot baths, saunas and more.
Relocations
Creative Action
The educational art program for children will move its headquarters to Mueller, opening a new “community arts collaborative building,” according to a news release. Construction is slated to begin in May 2026, with Creative Action to occupy the space in fall 2027.
In the News
Birds Barbershop
The barbershop opened its first location in May 2006 in South Austin. The brand is celebrating two decades of hair care services with a limited edition beer with St. Elmo Brewing. Birds Barbershop offers color services, styling and cuts for adults and kids.
Devil's Details Boutique
The vintage jewelry boutique is celebrating its 10th anniversary south Austin this year, according to owner Rebekka Adams. The boutique’s pirate-themed birthday party will feature gifts, sales and new inventory from the East Coast.
Dirty Martin’s Place
The West Campus spot will celebrate 100 years of service at its brick and mortar this summer, according to plans shared by Daniel Young, the business’ general manager. The restaurant will host a celebration July 10-12, with the main party on July 11.
Lammes Candies
The candy store closed its Round Rock storefront April 24, with the flagship store on Airport Boulevard in Austin to follow soon, according to the business. The candy company is known for a specialty praline, chocolates, taffies, brittles and other treats. Topo Development Group, an Austin-based real estate firm, is under contract to purchase the real estate housing the iconic Lammes Candies, according to a news release.
Neighbor Coffee & Friends
Caleb and Morgan Williamson opened Neighbor Coffee & Friends in April 2021, bringing a simplified and approachable coffee selection to north Austin. The coffee trailer serves classic coffee, specialty lattes and small bites, including biscuits and scones.
Paramount Theatre
Paramount Theatre will temporarily close, beginning mid-June, for its first major renovation in over half a century, according to a news release. The restoration is expected to take 8-9 months and is supported by the Shine On capital campaign.
The Tiny Farmer’s Market
Hannah Gustafson launched The Tiny Farmer’s Market last April selling homemade jams in her front yard with hopes of meeting her neighbors and fostering community. Now, the market features live music, free drinks and over 30 vendors.
Closings
Chi'Lantro
Chi'Lantro, a Korean and Tex-Mex fusion restaurant, closed its location on Burnet Road effective April 30, according to founder Jae Kim. The location was Chi'Lantro’s second brick and mortar, Kim said, which opened in 2015 and served rice bowls, kimchi fries and more.
CoCo’s Cafe
After more than 25 years of business, CoCo’s Cafe announced it will be closing its doors in West Campus next month. The Taiwanese restaurant will continue to serve boba drinks, rice-based dishes and noodles to patrons at its northwest Austin location.
Yard Bar
North Austin dog park and bar announced it will close its doors on May 30. Kristen Heaney Clark, owner of Yard Bar, shared the news in an Instagram post. Yard Bar opened for brews and barks on 20,000-square-feet of land over a decade ago.
