DATA: 2022 marks busiest year for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport faced its busiest year ever in 2022, according to data released by ABIA on Feb. 14.

The year’s total passenger count was approximately 21.1 million passengers, about 55% more than 2021. May was the busiest month of the year, with approximately 2.1 million passengers, an 83% increase from May 2021, data showed.

In 2022, the total number of passengers who flew out of the Barbara Jordan Terminal was 20.5 million, up approximately 56% from 2021. The total number of passengers from the South Terminal in 2022 was approximately 545,400, an increase of about 23% from 2021, data showed.

Southwest Airlines was the busiest airline for ABIA in 2022, with 8 million passengers, an approximate 73% increase from 2021, according to the data. Two new airlines were brought to the airport last year, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Virgin Atlantic. The airport offered eight new nonstop destinations and reinstated two.

Expansion and Development

Journey with AUS, the ABIA expansion and development program launched in 2021, secured $400 million of funding through an airport revenue bond sale and $15 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The funding will provide expanded security checkpoints, new restrooms, lounge space and three new gates used during construction of the midfield concourse tunnel.

The East Cargo Facility began construction in April and will provide space for cargo operations.

A second jet fuel facility began construction in April, with an estimated completion set for October 2024. Foundation for the two jet fuel tanks are complete, but construction on the tanks continues.

The installation of an outbound baggage handling system began in October. The system will process baggage for departing flights and increase the output of checked bags per hour.
