Brazos County commissioners approved a new artificial intelligence policy at its June 23 meeting, establishing rules and expectations for how county departments may use AI tools.
The policy was approved to create guardrails for data security and appropriate use of technology across county offices.
About the policy
According to agenda materials, the policy provides guidelines for how county staff may use AI tools in daily operations. The framework is designed to ensure human oversight remains in place for decision-making, data handling and public-facing functions.
The policy is expected to serve as a baseline document for future technology decisions as departments explore efficiency tools and automation.
Agenda material included the following human oversight requirement: “County employees remain responsible for all final work product regardless of the level of AI assistance used in its development. AI Tools are intended to assist County personnel and shall not independently make final governmental, legal, personnel, procurement, financial, enforcement, or policy decisions without appropriate human review and authorization.”
Commissioners did not discuss an individual software system or vendor, and the policy was passed without discussion, as it was already drafted.

- Historical Commission award: Brazos County Historical Commission was formally recognized for receiving a 2025 Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Historical Commission for the county's work in local preservation and historical research. Brazos County was one of 62 recognized.
- Public defender update: The court received a quarterly report from the Public Defender’s Office, which is expanding its juvenile and mental health defense divisions while continuing to deal with staffing vacancies.
- Forensic lab technician: A salary was approved for a lab technician at the new medical examiner’s office. The technician will be hired at the rate of $28.26 per hour. The position was approved at the court’s June 9 meeting.
