After months of discussion about budgets and potential design options, the Bryan ISD school board unanimously approved designs for the new 43,000-square-foot Merrill Green Field House and scoreboard during the Oct. 19 meeting.

The gist

As previously reported by Community Impact, talks about the new field house design date back to March, when Bryan ISD approved a contract with PBK Architects for the $35.8 million 2025 bond project. Bryan ISD Deputy Superintendent Brian Merrell continued to share details on the schedule and design throughout the spring and into the summer, with the firm advancing final design options in September.

The new field house is expected to include:

Locker rooms for high school athletes
Weight rooms and training areas
Multipurpose space
Coaches’ offices
Circulation and support areas
An access tunnel
A new video board and distributed sound system

During the Oct. 5 Bryan ISD meeting, Merrell and a PBK representative advanced the final designs with an endorsement for the new gym design from Bryan ISD Executive Director of Athletics Dereck Rush. He said the open gym design will help with athletes' mental well-being and create a more welcoming environment.

What the board is saying

Merrell and PBK representative Juan Lopez presented the designs from the previous meeting to the board again, clarifying and finalizing the ideas and objectives for the project. Merrell said the designs will be built with the future and people with disabilities in mind, so the field house and gym can be used by everyone.

After a series of questions and discussion with the board, Bryan ISD Board President Joel Bryan said the project looked “incredible.”

Board member Ruthie Waller said she hopes the project will use high-quality materials and components that will last the district for many years.

Going forward

The board unanimously approved the designs of the new field house and scoreboard, with board members Felicia Benford and Julie Harlin-Wolf absent. Construction is expected to be completed sometime in spring 2028 and is currently on time, according to PBK.
