Abu Omar Halal, a College Station restaurant known for shawarma and other halal-prepared foods, has announced it’s relocating to the Northgate District.
The gist
Abu Omar has two locations in College Station, one of them being on Texas A&M University’s campus. The Houston-based restaurant franchise was originally a food truck but has expanded to other states with trucks and physical storefronts.
Owner Amjad Mohammad told Community Impact the reason for the move was for a better location and to be closer to students on Northgate. Operating in College Station for almost a decade, the move from Texas Avenue to University Drive will have the business sit right across the street from the university.
Mohammad said the location is better for in-person customers, as many of the orders at the Texas Avenue location were online. He said he also expects many more customers on game days and at night when the school year starts.
What Abu Omar Halal offers
Abu Omar Halal boasts a variety of Halal street food and sandwiches and says it is best known for its signature chicken shawarma. Specialty menu items include:
- Italian Shawarma Meal: Meat, cheese and garlic sauce in a "Panini Pressed Sesame Seed Italian Bread" and cut into eight pizza-like slices. This dish is served with fries, pickled vegetables and a side of garlic sauce.
- Loaded Fries: French fries with the customer's choice of meat, loaded with cheese and topped with garlic sauce.
- Quesadillas Style Shawarma: Similar to the Italian Shawarma Meal, this dish includes a "Panini-Pressed Tortilla Bread" and cut into four slices.
The restaurant is known for serving Halal foods to the public, but also does catering and private events.
What’s next
Moving just before the start of the school year, Abu Omar is open to serve Halal foods to residents and the incoming wave of new students at the university.
