Harris County Appraisal District officials announced the retirement of their chief appraiser, Roland Altinger, in a July news release, stating that his 30-plus-year tenure will be officially completed by the end of February.
Altinger joined HCAD in 1988 and served as chief appraiser for the largest county in Texas for nine years.

"Annually appraising nearly 2 million parcels covering an area larger than Rhode Island that includes every conceivable property type, from vacant land to massive oil refineries, is not done anywhere else in the country," Altinger said in the release. "All the while navigating historic natural disasters such as Tropical Storm Allison, hurricanes Ike and Harvey, the Memorial Day and Tax Day floods, plus a global pandemic, with major law and procedural changes enacted every two years."
