Houston's District C moves forward with drainage projects, study for new trail
Houston officials approved a pair of projects that would improve drainage infrastructure and expand access to green space in District C.
What this means
Houston City Council approved a contract for $9.1 million April 8 to fund pavement, storm sewer and waterline improvements in the Roseland community. Streets for that project include:
Harris County, Houston officials green light $56.9M flood project in Kingwood
A $56.9 million flood mitigation project in Kingwood is moving forward following actions taken by Harris County Commissioners Court and Houston City Council in late March and early April, respectively.
What happened?
Harris County commissioners awarded a nearly $29.39 million flood mitigation project to Brice Construction & Design LLC during a business court meeting March 31. Roughly one week later, Houston City Council approved a $10 million appropriation out of the Reimbursement of Equipment/Project Fund and authorized an interlocal agreement with Harris County Flood Control District for the same project during the April 7 council meeting.
The Taylor Gully Channel Conveyance Improvements and Woodridge Stormwater Detention Basin project aims to reduce the risk of flooding in Kingwood through a combination of channel conveyance improvements and a stormwater detention basin, per the HCFCD website.
The project was identified as part of the Kingwood Drainage Analysis Study and is being funded with $41.94 million from Community Development Block Grant-Mitigation funding and $19.2 million from other funding sources, per the HCFCD website.
Coastal Prairie Conservancy preserves final 221 acres of Three Oaks Farm
The Coastal Prairie Conservancy has preserved the final 221 acres of Three Oaks Farm, closing a gap in the Katy Prairie Preserve, officials announced in a March 23 news release.
The big picture
Three Oaks Farm links the Indiangrass Preserve and Hebert Reservoir together, allowing water, wildlife and working lands to “function more naturally” throughout the landscape, per the release.
The addition fortifies almost 20,000 acres of prairie, wetlands and working lands in western Houston to serve several key functions, including:
H-GAC officials launch new transportation website ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Officials with the Houston-Galveston Area Council, a regional transportation organization in Texas, recently launched a new website designed to help commuters and employers plan ahead as the city prepares for a busy summer chock-full of events.
Why now?
Houston is preparing to hold seven matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament in June-July, as well as a 39-day fan festival. Over the course of those two months, the city will also host several Houston Astros games and a large Independence Day celebration.
The combination of events is expected to bring more than 500,000 visitors to the area between June 14 and July 19, according to a March 13 news release from H-GAC.

Vonlane adds new luxury motor coach route in The Woodlands, connecting Houston metro and Austin
The luxury motor coach service Vonlane announced April 8 that its newest route will connect the Houston metro to Austin with a departure point in The Woodlands starting May 4. The route is the 12th for the company.
Vonlane launched a route between The Woodlands and Dallas last year.
What to expect
Vonlane will offer services between The Woodlands and Austin seven days a week at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center, 1601 Lake Robbins Drive, The Woodlands, and DoubleTree by Hilton Austin-University Area, 1617 N. I-35, Austin.
