College of the Mainland to build new League City facility

The College of the Mainland will convert a Methodist church into an education facility to replace the existing League City location the college is outgrowing.

The College of the Mainland board of trustees Dec. 11 unanimously approved leasing the former League City United Methodist Church at 1411 W. Main St., League City. It is expected to open to students this summer, according to a press release.

The 27,570-square-foot facility will house general education and dual-credit classes for students in League City, Friendswood, Dickinson, Kemah and other cities in northern Galveston County. Nearly 41% of College of the Mainland’s overall students and 63% of the college’s dual-credit students live in northern Galveston County, making the League City location important to the college’s success, the release reads.

“College of the Mainland remains committed to providing quality educational opportunities to all areas throughout our service district,” College of the Mainland President Warren Nichols said in the release. “As our dual-credit program continues to grow, it is important that we are diligent in supporting this growth to reach every segment of our college community.”

Tuition and fees will pay for all expenses of the new site, including the lease, utilities and personnel. No bond or property tax monies will pay for the new facility, and it will generate income for the college, the release reads.

The new facility will replace the existing North County Learning Center at 200 Parker Court, League City, when its lease expires in August 2021. The college’s main campus in Texas City will continue to serve students from southern Galveston County, according to the release.
