Bay Area school districts, colleges close ahead of incoming Tropical Storm Nicholas

Several school districts and colleges in the Bay Area have closed as Tropical Storm Nicholas approaches Houston.

Tropical Storm Nicholas is expected to hit the Houston area overnight Monday or early Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

School district updates:

Clear Creek ISD announced the evening of Sept. 12 all campuses would be closed Sept. 13 to allow families and staff to prepare for the storm. The district announced it will remain closed on Sept. 14 as well. All evening activities were canceled for both days as well, including CCISD’s board of trustees workshop, which will be rescheduled.
Pearland ISD will be closed on Sept. 13 and Sept. 14 for all students and staff due to Tropical Storm Nicholas. In addition, all after-school activities were also canceled for both days. A decision regarding Sept. 15 will be made by the afternoon on Sept. 14, according to the district's Twitter page.
Friendswood ISD is closed Sept. 13, according to the district website. All after-school activities are canceled as well, including FISD’s board meeting, which will be rescheduled.
Alvin ISD will be closed on Sept. 13 and Sept. 14 as well. Residents can monitor the district's website and social media for updates. The district has not canceled its scheduled board meeting for Sept. 14.
Houston ISD and Pasadena ISD are closed Sept. 13, according to the HISD and PISD websites. Fort Bend ISD will dismiss all schools and facilities by mid-afternoon. All Sept. 14 classes are canceled at HISD and FBISD, and PISD will make a decision by the afternoon regarding Sept. 14 classes.

College updates:

The University of Houston-Clear Lake was open the morning of Sept. 13 but will close at noon. Sept. 14 classes will be online and remote. An update on Sept. 15 operations will be made by 3 p.m. Sept. 14.
Alvin Community College is closed Sept. 13. Officials instructed students to tune into ACC’s social media and website for updates.
All in-person and on-campus classes and operations at College of the Mainland are canceled Sept. 13 and 14, per COM news releases. No students, employees or visitors are allowed in COM buildings without permission from the College of the Mainland Police Department, which will remain on campus. The college will provide another update on Sept. 15 operations by 8 p.m. Sept. 14.
San Jacinto College will close at 4 p.m. Sept. 13 and has canceled all Sept. 14 classes, according to an update posted around noon Sept. 13. A decision about Sept. 15 will be made by 7 p.m. Sept. 14. Employees should not report for work on Tuesday, either in-person or remotely, unless contacted by their leaders for specific duties, per the update.
