Galveston County reports record highest single-day COVID-19 recoveries

Galveston County has reported an additional 222 coronavirus cases since Aug. 8, bringing the total case count to 9,605 as of Aug. 11.

More than 5,000 of the cases—about 53%—are currently active, according to health department data. No new deaths were reported Aug. 11, but two were reported Aug. 10; the Aug. 10 deaths were the first reported since July 27.

There were 8,825 total cases in the county at the start of August, marking an 8.8% increase over the course of the month. The highest single-day number of recoveries since mid-March—334—was reported Aug. 11.

Galveston, League City and Texas City all have more than 1,500 confirmed cases as of Aug. 11. More than 70% of the cases confirmed in Galveston County have been reported in patients age 50 and younger.

The county also began displaying antibody test results on the database in mid-June. More than 4,000 people have received the testing thus far, with all but 282 of those people testing negative.

Outbreaks at six nursing homes in Friendswood, League City and Texas City have infected a collective 256 people, per health department data. The nursing home outbreaks account for about 6.5% of the cases in League City and in Texas City and about 2% of the total cases in Friendswood.
