DATA: 9 in every 10 Galveston County COVID-19 cases is now a recovery

About 90% of the total COVID-19 cases in Galveston County are now listed as recoveries, according to the latest data from the Galveston County Health District.

GCHD has reported an additional 173 coronavirus cases and one new death since Sept. 17, bringing the total case count to 11,575 on Sept. 25. The new case count total reflects an average of about 22 cases per day over the last eight days.

Just more than 1,000 of the cases—less than 9%—are currently active, according to health department data. The 140 deaths represent a case fatality of 1.2%.

Of the total positive cases, 3,084 or 27% have been in League City. Galveston and Texas City have seen 2,239 and 1,929 cases, respectively, and Friendswood has a total of 735 positive cases, according to GCHD data. A third of the total active cases are in League City.

More than 2,300 positive cases have been reported in residents ages 21-30, the highest of any age group, and 162 of those cases are considered active as of Sept. 25. However, no county residents under the age of 31 have died from COVID-19. More than 4,200 total residents ages 0-30 have recovered from the coronavirus, per GCHD data.

There are currently 72 people hospitalized with COVID-19, mainly concentrated in League City, Texas City and Galveston. Residents ages 71-90 make up 44% of the total number of current hospitalizations. More than 400 total people have been hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of Sept. 25.
