100th anniversary of downtown Bastrop bridge to be held at Neighbor's Kitchen and Yard

Live music, food and refreshments will be available at the 100th birthday celebration of the Old Iron Bridge in downtown Bastrop from 5:30-8 p.m. on Nov. 14 at Neighbor's Kitchen and Yard. A lighting of the bridge will take place at dusk.

Efforts to repair the bridge are set begin in early 2024. Plans are in place to reopen the bridge for pedestrian traffic following construction.

Despite not receiving a grant for the bridge, there will be a call for bonds in December to pay for the bridge's repair.

Those planning to attend the event can make a reservation through the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce website.

Built to replace the original iron bridge connecting downtown Bastrop to the western side of town, the bridge was built in 1923 and opened to the public in early 1924.

"The old town is our icon,” historian Ken Kessellus said. “The bridge, in one picture, represents the age of the town.”
