Bastrop streets getting new look through Oct. 22

Streets throughout the city of Bastrop are getting facelifts as part of the rehabilitation portion of a $70 million street maintenance program approved by residents in late 2023.

Some context

Vivianna Andres, Bastrop city manager assistant, said officials chose Holbrook Asphalt Co. to lay the high-density mineral bond, or HA5, because it lasts about nine times longer than traditional methods, making it more cost-effective in the long run.

“HA5 is a material best used on streets that are typically between two to eight years of age with minimal cracking and no failures,” Andres said. “Eighty street sections were able to be addressed in the first [repair] phase of the HA5 project, and in this second phase, an additional 22 street sections will receive the treatment.”

Andres said the final stage will focus on constructing new streets, and is set to begin in 2025.

Some of the streets scheduled to receive the pavement preservation treatment through Oct. 22 include:

• Main Street
• Pecan Street
• Loop 150
• Water Street
• Cedar Street

What you need to know

According to information in the Bastrop Street Maintenance program packet, drivers will see some scuffing on the roads in the weeks following installation; however, it is temporary.

“Over time, the markings on the pavement will heal themselves with regular traffic,” per the packet. “Traffic is actually an essential part of the curing process.”
