Bastrop is moving forward with plans to preserve and highlight the history of the city’s South End District, a year after City Council formally established the area.
The update
During the Sept. 14 State of the City presentation, Bastrop City Manager Sylvia Carrillo-Trevino highlighted several projects planned for the district, including an African American Cultural Center and Freedom Colonies Museum near Kerr Park, along with park and sidewalk improvements and public art installations.
Council allocated $500,000 in 2026 bond funding toward the project during an August meeting.
What's planned
The approximately 5,000-square-foot facility will become the permanent home of the Freedom Colonies Museum and support educational programming, community events and cultural activities, Carrillo-Trevino said.
