Incumbents claim victory in Leander City Council election

Garcia, elected to his first three-year council term after taking over Place 3 in 2011, said he looks forward to keeping City Council intact the next years because no local election is scheduled next year.

"So hopefully that means less politics and more work for our citizens," Garcia said. "In the end we all care about Leander and want to see our city succeed, and after a while there is a friendship that gets built."

Both Garcia and Navarrette cited economic development as Leander's top need as they look ahead the next three years. Navarrette, first elected in a special 2009, said she looks forward to using information from The Retail Coach—an economic development consultant hired by the city earlier this year—to help advance the city's growth.

"I think a lot of things are going to start popping up around here," she said. "And we have The Retail Coach to thank for that."

She also expressed excitement about the development of Leander's transit-oriented development district near the Capital Metro Park & Ride station.

"Unfortunately a lot of people had given up on that," she said.

Dishongh was elected to his first full term on council after taking over the Place 5 seat in a runoff election last June.

Incumbents Andrea Navarrette and Simon Garcia are each leading races to retain their seats on Leander City Council.

According to unofficial early voting results, Navarrette leads challenger John Perez for the Place 1 seat with 58.5 percent of the early vote, while Garcia leads Jerry Perez with 57.6 percent of the vote.

Also, Place 5 Councilman Jason Dishongh retained his seat, as he ran unopposed.

The three incumbents, Navarrette, Garcia and Dishongh, originally took over their council seats in 2009, 2011 and 2012, respectively.

Council members are elected to three-year terms.
