Drivers can expect to experience “significant travel delays” on southbound MoPac between Enfield Road and RM 2222 this weekend, Aug. 11-14, as the highway will squeeze down to one lane for construction. Starting 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, the center and left lanes of southbound MoPac will be closed. The right lane and the right auxiliary, or merge, exit lane will remain open. The closures will allow workers to mill and remove the existing pavement and prepare the roadway for final paving. “That will result in significant backups,” said Steve Pustelnyk, director of community relations for the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, which is managing the project. Having the lanes closed during the days will allow the contractor to squeeze about eight shifts of work into one weekend, Pustelnyk said. “With the fall approaching and cold weather being an outlying risk, the contractor wants to get into southbound side and get that paving work done,” he said. Additional lane closures could also occur on northbound MoPac during nighttime hours. The lane closures also coincide with the state’s annual sales tax holiday weekend. Pustelnyk said drivers should plan alternatives routes and avoid southbound MoPac. The MoPac Improvement Project is adding one express lane in each direction on MoPac from Parmer Lane to Lady Bird Lake. The project is expected to be complete in late summer.
