Schools in areas affected by Hurricane Harvey have begun to reopen and many students forced to evacuate their homes are without basic school supplies, Kori Crow, founder of nonprofit 24BackPacks said. In an effort to address this need, 24BackPacks is hosting an online school supplies drive that will benefit students along the Texas coastline and in Houston. Supplies are being collected through an Amazon wishlist registry, which includes cases of glue, highlighters, scissors, rulers and more. Backpacks are another necessary item for students and can be purchased on the registry or through EDS Industries, a retail company offering a discounted rate and free shipping on bulk orders. There is also a need for 70-page, wide-rule spiral notebooks that can be purchased for 25 cents at local stores, Crow said. These are not available on Amazon but can be dropped off at Crow's home, located at 4507 Avenue D, Austin. “We have donations coming from Budapest and Barcelona from just people who want to help," Crow said. "This has just worked out so well.” Crow said the original goal of the group, which was founded immediately following the storm, was to donate 24 backpacks filled with school supplies to shelters that saw an influx of Hurricane Harvey evacuees. But that number quickly grew, Crow explained. “We are aiming to donate 1,200 backpacks,” she said. The group is working with county sheriffs, community leaders and recovery relief effort leaders in affected areas to distribute the supplies and meet the needs of the students. “So many people are donating food and clothes but I knew with school starting up soon there would be a heavy need for school supplies,” Crow said. “I wanted to start looking ahead and I thought this would be a way to fill that gap.” Donations will be accepted through the end of September.
