Three clinics will open in October for uninsured residents of Austin and Travis County seeking flu shots.
Austin Public Health is offering free influenza immunizations for uninsured Travis County residents 6 months of age or older and all Medicare recipients with a valid Medicare card.
According to a recent Austin Public Health press release, flu activity varies from season to season. January tends to be the peak of flu activity in Texas, however, seasonal flus can begin as early as October and continue through May.
“That’s why this is a good time to get vaccinated before the flu season really takes off,” said Carole Barasch, manager of communications and community development for Austin Public Health.
Austin Public Health offered a few other tips to avoid the spread of the flu:
• Get an annual flu shot
• Wash hands often
• Cover coughs and sneezes using a sleeve instead of hands
• Don’t touch your face with your hands
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
• If you feel sick, stay home from work or school
