Hays County is inviting residents to attend public meetings to hear more about proposed road projects, part of the now-void 2024 Hays County Road Bond.

The details

The open-house style meetings will allow community members a chance to speak with Hays County commissioners and project officials to ask questions and provide feedback on updates and funding strategies related to the proposed projects.

The county currently has plans for meetings in Buda, Dripping Springs and Wimberley, including:
  • Aug. 27: 5-7 p.m., Buda City Hall, 405 E. Loop St., Buda
  • Sept. 17: 5-7 p.m., Dripping Springs Ranch Park and Event Center, 1042 Event Center Drive, Dripping Springs
  • Sept. 18: 5-7 p.m., Wimberley Community Center, 14068 Ranch Road 12, Wimberley
Officials said more meetings are in the works.

The background

A Travis County judge recently overturned the road bond election, which passed with 55% of the vote and allotted $440 million to over 30 road improvement projects. The judge ruled the election void due to noncompliance with Texas Open Meetings Act laws.

Following the overturning, the Hays County Commissioners Court unanimously voted July 29 to pursue alternative funding through $240 million in certificates of obligation—a separate funding mechanism from a bond that funds projects without voter approval. The COs would fund planning and design for projects initially included in the road bond, except the SH 45 Extension project, a news release states.

The court also unanimously voted July 8 to appeal the ruling and is still pursuing that option, according to the release.
