According to an April 28 statement by the Austin ISD board of trustees, Superintendent Paul Cruz's last day serving in the position will be Aug. 31, the same day the district has set as a goal to hire a replacement. The district does not intend to assign an interim superintendent, according to the statement.

Cruz will also act as a "superintendent emeritus" through the end of 2020 to allow for a smooth transition with the new hire.

Austin ISD will begin holding online stakeholder meetings this week to gather feedback about its ongoing superintendent search.

The district earlier this month approved a contract with JG Consulting to conduct its superintendent search. Company President and CEO James Guerra told district trustees April 27 that the group will host meetings over the next three weeks and will begin reaching out to district residents April 28. The group also hopes to hold in-person stakeholder meetings once social distancing requirements related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic are lifted, he said.

"Our hope is we can engage and meet with you in person at the appropriate time,” Guerra said.

Board President Geronimo Rodriguez said that the district’s goal is to hire a new superintendent by Aug. 31.

Paul Cruz, the district’s superintendent since 2015, announced in February that he would resign later this year to work at The University of Texas. Cruz is still serving as superintendent currently.
