In 2014, Leslie Paetschow found herself spending a lot of time at city dog parks trying to tire her recently adopted puppy out while occasionally wishing she could relax and have a beer.

Thus, the idea for The Watering Bowl, a dog park and bar where dogs can roam off leash while supervised by staff, was born.

In October 2021, after years of planning, Paetschow and Chief Dogperations Officer Heather Spearman, who she met through a Bulldog rescue group, opened shop.

Though the summer was rough with back-to-back triple digit days, Paetschow said the first year in business has been rewarding—from getting to know the regulars to helping educate customers about The Watering Bowl’s safety rules.

“It has been very validating to hear how many people love it after having this dream for so long,” Paetschow said.

Dogs are required to be up-to-date on shots and spayed or neutered. On site “rufferees” watch the dogs play. No children are allowed.

The park offers daily passes, starting at $10 for one dog and increasing up to $17.50 for three, monthly membership, day care and special events.

The bar serves local beers, wines and ciders.

“I think if COVID[-19] taught us anything it is that you need to support your neighbors because if you don’t, they won’t be there,” Spearman said.

Spearman said the South Austin business has become a meeting spot for locals.“[Customers] feel like we have brought a sense of community to the area,” Spearman said.

For dogs, Spearman said many are exhausted from playing and ready to relax when they get home. Even less active dogs get mental stimulation.

“The goal is for the dogs to have their best lives ever. To have the best day they possibly can,” Spearman said.
