The Downtown Station on Capital Metro's Red Line will temporarily close Jan. 2-5 amid construction activity for the Austin Convention Center redevelopment.

What's happening

The entire CapMetro rail line won't be operating on New Year's Day Jan. 1, and Downtown Station service will remain suspended for the next several days due to the construction.

During the disruption, the Plaza Saltillo Station to the east will serve as the rail line's end of service. Dedicated bus transfer service to and from Plaza Saltillo and the Downtown Station will be available Jan. 2-5.

CapMetro encourages riders to plan for additional travel time and check live service updates during the station closure. Updates are available by signing up for CapMetro Alerts, downloading the Transit App, or calling the Customer GO line at 512-474-1200.

"We appreciate our community’s patience and cooperation during this short-term disruption," the agency said in a release.

One more thing

The construction activity comes soon after Austin officials approved a fee waiver for the relocation of some CapMetro infrastructure around the Downtown Station as the convention center project progresses. The city is also planning other mobility improvements like new protected bike lanes, on-street parking and pedestrian crossings in the area as the new facility is developed.
