To help determine if Austin ISD will begin a nationwide search for a new superintendent this spring, the district is asking community members for their input in October.

On Oct. 23 and Oct. 25, virtual sessions over Zoom in both English and Spanish will be open to the public in regards to the superintendent search.

The background

Conversations about the hiring process had slowed since March, when the board of trustees approved an extension of interim Superintendent Matias Segura’s contract for an additional year, set to expire June 30, 2024.

The decision to extend Segura's contract paused the $42,000 process of finding a permanent superintendent that began in May 2022 after former Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde left the district in June for a position at Dallas ISD, as previously reported by Community Impact.

Segura was named the district’s interim superintendent Dec. 15, following a Nov. 10 announcement that former interim Superintendent Anthony Mays would leave the district for a position in Houston.

On Jan. 26, the district announced that GR Recruiting will serve as the search firm for a superintendent. In the event the search extends nationwide, the firm will remain under contract with the district.
