The city of San Marcos will host an informal safety demonstration and information session Feb. 19 at the San Marcos Farmer’s Market on proper use of a new portion of the Guadalupe Street two-way bicycle lane downtown at 155 E. San Antonio St. from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., according to a press release.

The lane is slated to open Feb. 14. Bicycle traffic signals were added from University Drive to Grove Street. A physical barrier separates vehicle traffic and the bicycle lanes from University to Grove; however the lane will remain closed south of MLK Drive for more sidewalk construction with a tentative opening date in April.

Green pavement markings will be added to the Guadalupe Street bicycle lanes in the spring. Those green markings are part of a Texas Department of Transportation study on their effectiveness to increase use and safety, according to the release. Results from the findings in San Marcos could lead to statewide green pavement marking standards.

The $1.5 million project is part of the city’s transportation master plan adopted by City Council in December 2018.
