The Kyle hospital will cost upwards of $300 million and provide a variety of services including an emergency center, according to St. David’s CEO David Huffstutler.
The details
St. David’s officially acquired land for the Kyle hospital in 2024.
The system has faced some delays in its various infrastructure projects, including the future Leander hospital, but Huffstutler said development of the Kyle hospital is likely to occur “much more rapidly” than has been the case in Leander.
“We anticipate—because of demand and where that market is—that it would be a much shorter time frame,” Huffstutler said.
Once fully operational, the Kyle hospital will offer services such as:
- A 24/7 emergency department
- Inpatient and outpatient surgery
- Women’s, maternity and newborn services
- Lab areas for specializations such as cardiac catheterization
St. David opened a freestanding emergency center in Leander in 2018 while it is in the process of developing its hospital, which will connect to the center.
The Kyle hospital could follow similar plans by building an emergency center first, but it ultimately depends on when the Leander hospital begins construction, Huffstutler said.
“There are pros and cons to both locations, but it’s always difficult to try to develop and open two new hospital facilities at one time” Huffstutler said.
Huffstutler anticipates a decision to be made within the next six months on whether the Leander or Kyle hospital will be built first.
If Kyle is prioritized first, the emergency center and hospital would likely be built in tandem, he said.
