The Buda Sportsplex will soon undergo renovations for improvements after City Council awarded a $14.9 million contract.

The details

Construction will cover the expansion and enhancement of the softball and soccer complex, which includes four new softball fields, reconstruction of four existing fields, 800 new parking spots, batting cages and a concession stand.

The cost

City Council awarded the $14.9 million contract to G Hyatt Construction Inc. on Aug. 19.

The city has identified $17.9 million of funding from the following sources, including:The city currently has approximately $6.6 million available for the project, with the remaining $11.25 million set to be reimbursed by the proposed 2026 CO bond; however, council members have not yet taken action to issue the bond.

The updated sportsplex facilities are expected to generate additional revenue from tournaments, field and equipment rentals, and concession sales. Buda officials said they also anticipate that the improved amenities will draw more people to the city.

“It’s going to bring people to Buda, which has carry-on effects of retail sales tax across the board,” Mayor Lee Urbanovsky said.

The background

The Buda Sportsplex opened in 2007 and was intended to drive economic activity, but fell short due to outdated equipment and a lack of owner oversight, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.

In 2024, the city approved bonds to update the sportsplex. City Council authorized a 60% design this May before sending the project to a competitive bid in June.

Looking ahead

Construction is scheduled to begin Sept. 8 and be completed in August 2026.
