San Marcos City Council denies license plate reader expansion
Following months of public concern, San Marcos City Council voted 5-2 on June 3 to deny a proposal to expand the police department’s license plate recognition, or LPR, technology. Council members Shane Scott and Matthew Mendoza dissented.
The proposal would have amended the city’s contract with Flock Group Inc. to increase the number of LPR cameras from 14 to 33. City documents state, “This item will add 19 cameras to the contract for a cost of $77,000 bringing the total contract amount to $124,068.49.”

Google Fiber expands to Kyle; first customers expected next spring
Providing faster internet options, Google Fiber—also known as GFiber—will begin construction in Kyle this summer, with the goal of serving its first customers by next spring. The move aligns Kyle with nearby cities such as Austin that already offer the high-speed service.
Google Fiber is a high-speed internet provider that uses fiber-optic cables to deliver gigabit-level connectivity. The service is currently available in select U.S. cities. According to the company’s website, its mission is to deliver fast, fairly priced and open internet access.

Hays County Jail offers free Narcan to reduce opioid deaths
A vending machine with Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, is now available to the public inside the Hays County Jail lobby to ensure “timely access to this critical intervention," according to a news release.
Naloxone is a medication that can rapidly reverse the often fatal effects of an opioid overdose, according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse. Opioid overdoses can be caused by substances such as heroin, fentanyl and prescription painkillers.
