Some context
Google Fiber is a high-speed internet provider that uses fiber-optic cables to deliver gigabit-level connectivity. The service is currently available in select U.S. cities. According to the company’s website, its mission is to deliver fast, fairly priced and open internet access.
According to a presentation to the council, GFiber aims to “delight residents during construction by being safe, clean, fast and minimally disruptive.”
The overview
To install GFiber, the company will primarily use a method called micro-trenching—cutting a shallow trench between the street and curb—which reduces interference with other utilities and speeds up construction, according to the City Council presentation. The method also requires less disruptive equipment and allows crews to move quickly through neighborhoods.
GFiber plans to conduct community outreach, including neighborhood meetings to address questions and explain construction plans, the City Council presentation states.
During construction, signage will be placed at major neighborhood entrances, and impacted homes will receive door hangers with contact information for a construction hotline and website. Utility locator markings and temporary “no parking” signs will also be placed at least 48 hours in advance.
Construction is expected to begin in southeast Kyle, where GFiber’s central facility is located, before expanding northward, according to GFiber representative John-Michael Cortez. Neighborhoods with homeowner associations will require separate agreements to receive the service, and unincorporated areas of Hays County would need a county-level agreement.
“Honestly, it’s really exciting now to have options, so thank you for coming to Kyle,” council member Robert Rizo said.
The background
GFiber first presented its plans to Kyle City Council in June 2023, according to city documents. In September 2024, the council approved a nonexclusive public right-of-way license agreement with Google Fiber Texas LLC.
