What to expect
Beginning in late May 2025, crews will start replacing traditional analog meters with wireless-connected digital meters across the city, the news release states. These smart meters are designed to transmit encrypted water usage data over a private radio frequency directly to the utilities department, eliminating the need for manual readings and improving accuracy to 1/100th of a gallon.
The full installation process is expected to wrap up by the end of 2025. Customers will be able to access their water data through a new online portal that will include:
- Custom notifications for sudden spikes in usage that may signal leaks or continuous flow
- Daily water use updates to help monitor and manage consumption
- Usage reports to assist in conserving water and lowering monthly bills
Meter replacements will be taking place. Residents do not need to be home during installation. A door hanger will be left after the upgrade is complete, according to the news release.
Homes with meters being replaced will experience a temporary interruption in water service lasting about 15 to 30 minutes. Installation technicians will notify residents in advance of the brief outage.
To help crews complete upgrades efficiently, the city is asking residents to trim any landscaping around their meter boxes to ensure easy access.
