The city’s Emergency Management Division is rolling out the Knox-Box Rapid Entry System, a voluntary program designed to improve emergency response for senior citizens and residents with disabilities, according to a news release.
The overview
The Knox-Box system will be available to qualifying residents who meet program guidelines. It gives first responders secure, quicker access to homes in urgent situations, the release states.
Participants receive a lockbox installed on their property that holds a spare key, according to the release. In an emergency, 911 operators can alert first responders if the resident is enrolled and provide the lockbox location, allowing responders to enter without delay.
Notable quote
“We are committed to providing the highest level of service to all members of our community, especially our seniors and individuals with disabilities,” Kyle Emergency Management Coordinator Jimmy Johnson said in a news release. “The Knox-Box system is just one way we are working to ensure our most vulnerable residents receive the assistance they need in an emergency.”
What’s next
To qualify, residents must be 65 or older and live alone, or be under 65 with a serious medical condition that could leave them incapacitated and living alone.
