Hays County has released early voting totals for Proposition A, a $440 million bond looking to fund the construction, design and right of way needed for more than 30 transportation projects across the county.
- For: 55.22% of voters, or 53,650 ballots are for the bond
- Against: 44.78% of voters, or 43,500 ballots have voted against Prop. A
Hays County Commissioners called a bond election for the proposition in August. The plan focuses on projects that will enhance safety, mobility and regional connectivity, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.
Residents and local nonprofit organizations have since voiced concerns with Proposition A. During an Aug. 13 commissioners court meeting, Hays County resident Crystal Doughtery said she believed the Fitzhugh Road/County Road 101 Project would not serve the needs of local residents and business owners, but the interests of outside developers.
A group of residents also filed a lawsuit in October, claiming the commissioners court violated the Texas Open Meetings Act.
Based on resident feedback, Bobby Levinski, an attorney with Save Our Springs Alliance, said a lot of people in the county do not know what is in the bond, and that residents felt like it was rushed.
"I would be surprised if it passes at this point," Levinski told Community Impact.
Community Impact reached out to Hays County for comment.
Communications Manager Natalie Frels said the county cannot comment on pending litigation, but local officials, like Precinct 2 Commissioner Michelle Cohen previously told Community Impact that the bond will improve road infrastructure within the county.
What else?
In early voting, there were 97,150 ballots cast toward the proposition countywide.
Polls closed at 7 p.m., although voters who were in line at 7 p.m. were still able to cast ballots.
