UPDATE: 9:40 a.m., Nov. 4

The race for the next mayor of San Marcos will continue in a December runoff with challenger Juan Miguel Arredondo facing incumbent Jane Hughson.

Neither Hughson or Arredondo received more than 50% of the vote, but they received the most ballots of the five candidates in the race. Hughson received 8,902 votes—44.75%—and Arredondo had 6,502—32.69%.

The runoff is tentatively set for Dec. 1, but the date is not official yet, according to a spokesperson for the city of San Marcos.

City Council's Place 5 position will also go to a runoff between Mark Gleason and Omar Baca.


Results are updated as of 9:40 a.m. Nov. 4 and are unofficial until they are canvassed and certified by the county clerk. Under Texas election law, the clerk accepts and counts mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day and received by Nov. 4, if they were sent from inside the U.S., or Nov. 9 if they were sent from outside the U.S.

Jane Hughson won her bid for reelection with 44.75% of the vote and 8,902 ballots in the mayoral race in San Marcos. Juan Miguel Arredondo trailed with 32.69% of votes and 6,502 ballots.


Michael Hathaway received 9.49% of votes, followed by Justin Harris and Randy Dethrow with 8.82% and 4.25%, respectively.

Under Texas election law, the clerk accepts and counts mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day and received by Nov. 4, if they were sent from inside the U.S., or Nov. 9 if they were sent from outside the U.S.

The first return of unofficial early voting totals Nov. 3 from Hays County show Jane Hughson with an early lead in the race for San Marcos mayor.

Hughson leads Juan Miguel Arredondo with a 46.48% share of all early votes. Arredondo has 31.73%. Michael Hathaway follows with 9.11%; Justin Harris has 8.56%; Randy Dethrow has 4.12%.

More than 98,000 county residents cast ballots by mail or during in-person early voting, which accounts for 64.24% of 152,840 registered voters in the county.
