The Single Member District 2 seat on the San Marcos CISD board of trustees will soon be vacant, and community members now have the opportunity to submit an application to be appointed to fill the seat.
How we got here
The district canceled its May election after District 1 trustee Jessica Cain and District 3 trustee Sandra Lopez were the only candidates to file in their races, securing new terms until 2029.
However, District 2 trustee Margie Villalpando—whose term is also up in May—is not seeking reelection, and no candidates filed to run in her place.
According to district officials, trustees can either appoint someone or call a special election to fill the seat.
"My concern is we had this open since early January for just regular filing, and nobody filed," trustee Miguel Arredondo said. "I hope that same challenge doesn't occur as we look for a potential appointment. I assume it will not, because I think the lack of an applicant to run and a lack of a district trustee for that single-member district has created some conversation in the community."

Prospective candidates can submit an application here. The seat must be filled by someone who has resided within the District 2 boundary, which encompasses San Marcos' east side along Hwy. 80, for at least six months.
Submissions are due by 2 p.m. April 20, and the board is expected to make the appointment at the board meeting that night.
The appointed candidate will serve until May 2027, at which time Arredondo and trustee Anne Halsey will also be up for reelection.
