The details
The new Felipe Reyna Administration building includes various administrative offices and a multipurpose boardroom for meetings and training sessions. The building also houses School Fuel, a nonprofit organization that provides food to eligible students.
The ribbon cutting marks the completion of a $7 million project for construction of the 26,000 square-foot office building.
The building is named after Felipe Reyna, a former educator who taught in San Marcos in the 1940s, district staff said. SMCISD Board President Anne Halsey said naming the new administration building after Reyna will remind community members of his legacy and mission.
“Mr. Reyna was a trailblazer in education — a teacher who inspired generations of students here in San Marcos,” she said during the ceremony. “His legacy lives on in our values, in our students’ aspirations, and now, in this space where decisions will be made that impact every corner of our district.”
The background
The district’s original administrative building was also named after Reyna in 1974, located on 501 S. LBJ Drive, San Marcos. The building was vacated in November 2017 due to mold issues. District administration then temporarily relocated to 631 Mill Street.
In 2023, the board of trustees approved an over $7 million contract with Noble General Contractors LLC for a new administration building, as previously reported by Community Impact. Funding for the project came from the SMCISD general fund and remaining funds from the 2017 bond project.
