Parents, community members and tennis champion Andre Agassi gathered March 4 to celebrate “Founders Day” at Doral Academy—a tuition-free science, technology, engineering and mathematics public charter school set to open this August in Buda.

Attendees signed a large, steel beam that will become a permanent feature of the campus.

This will be the first Doral Academy in Texas, joining the network with schools in Florida, Nevada and North Carolina, according to a press release.

Agassi is co-managing partner of the Turner-Agassi Education Facilities Fund, an investment fund managed by Turner Impact Capital that is aimed at providing resources to school operators nationwide, according to the release.

“Young people in the greater Austin area and throughout the country deserve high-performing, learning-friendly public schools,” Agassi said in the release.

The 58,000-square-foot facility is located at 1333 Firecracker Drive, Buda, and will serve about 600 students from pre-K through sixth grade; Doral Academy will expand through to 12th grade as students progress through the grade levels, according to the release.

“We are extremely excited to be opening the doors of this beautiful facility in just a few months to provide a rigorous and relevant STEM curriculum to the students of Buda and many nearby communities,” Superintendent and Principal Jennifer M. DeSousa said in the release. “Today’s event helped generate positive momentum toward our opening and helped spread the word to families that this exceptional academic option is available to local students.”
